Saying For Today: The individual self myth is pushing us in a downward spiral, but that might be essential for us to wake up.

When persons have forgotten how sanely to live and work together and with authenticity, regardless of what is accomplished, what is left but personal posturing? Has personal posturing become our way of living and to such an extent that we have forgotten we are posturing and not truly and truthfully sharing ourselves? Only in a work-and-money-focused culture, rather than a Communion-focused culture, would such social insanity be considered normal as a way of daily life and work. With such lack of authenticity, how can we even rightly speak of living together or working together, when we are really behaving as isolated selves, not beings in-Communion with one another - so, truly, together? Only a transcendence of this personal-self will allow us to live consistently as a self-with-others. This is a reason spiritual practice beyond conventional religion and spirituality is so essential for us, at this point in our history. The individual self myth is pushing us in a downward spiral, but that might be essential for us to wake up.

Work is love made visible.

*Kahlil Gibran. The Prophet.

Daily activity is understood as a precious means of union with Christ, capable of becoming ... the dialogue of love which is realized in works. Work is transformed by the spirit of prayer....

*St. Paul II, “The Greatness of Ordinary Life.”

Being open-hearted, being receptive, does not mean essentially being open, being receptive, for something, like receiving or giving love, being helped or helping, sharing with or being shared with, … Rather, this practice of spiritual presence is a way to create a space of being-present that has no goal come forth to the foreground. When such does happen, the contemplative posture is to let the agenda rest, and it sinks back into the background, even if it is a motivation that inspires the openness. Theoretically, we consciously practice this being-available-with, with a reasoning, or logic, in the background, for that logic motivates us to explore this practice and learn to trust it in life and work. But we do not allow the emptiness of Presence to be filled up with any reason for the emptiness – intent remaining general and in the background. This is a way of saying "Love is its own purpose" or "Love is sufficient to itself." Spiritual contemplatives can bring this atmosphere into life and work, and hopefully others will be drawn to the sanity of such a life of Grace.
